Virgil (warning long read ahead)

Postby rlpetty43 » Sat Dec 14, 2013 5:58 pm

I met Virgil about a year or maybe a year and a half ago he is interesting fellow to say the least and even though the 84 year old gentlemen is very hard of hearing and has tendency to tell the same stories repeatly I must say I enjoy listening to them. Virgil is long time resident of duncan, vetran of the Korean War, halliburton retiree, and long time jeeper. While working for halliburton he traveled the world over and circled it twice on two different occasions so he has alot of stories to say the least, up till about two years ago he traveled the state square dancing now he settles to go dancing with his "lady friend" every friday night which more often than not she is still at his home on saturday morning when I have arrived to work for him (old sly dog :o ) . In the 1960s Virgil began Wheelin with a 1949 willys along with a group of others from duncan (which is is still up and going but not in his possesion he sold it) He traveled to Alaska once with it and numerous trips to colorado wheelin the trails there as well as the gulf coast, eventually he purchased a CJ-7 which also has been to Alaska once and all over colorado. In 2007 A fire broke out in virgils shop which contain his cj-7 as well as a boat. as the fire grew he tried to pull the boat and jeep out of the shop which at that time a fireman ordered him out of the shop and they would take care of it, well the firemen watched the shop burn with the jeep and boat inside. Virgil says he should have "just ran the son of a bitch over and them dam firemen just come to watch it burn". Over the last few weekends I have been working with virgil on satudays cutting trees hauling stuff off etc in exchange for his CJ-7 what little does he know I would have done it just to hear his stories about his life. There are way to many of them for me to document here but perhaps as I post progress of the CJ-7 that I now call "virgil" Ill share another story or two about my friend Virgil.

First step is going to get all the crap cleaned out of it and remove the seats frames etc, next I want to pull the tub and take it to be media blasted. Can the tub be removed and the hood and front fenders stay in place?

Great story. I think you may already have a name for your new Jeep. "Virgil". I will be glad to help you with this rebuild.

Well yesterday we had some warmer weather so I began prepping to pull the motor, transmission and transfer case. Started by making room to store it then began spraying the PB blaster. I was surprised to find when I cut the lower radiator hose was full of pretty green antifreeze.

Im sure I will need many mnay more cans of this stuff but it works great so far only a couple broke bolts.

got to love simplicity of it!

Another thing about Virgil, I think he may have been the first to have a go-pro type set up, he had a power inverter under the seat of the CJ-7 and had a camera mounted to the front. Someday I plan to go to his place and watch some of these old school movies. Also I found the power inverter under the seat what was left of it any way.

Since I have been off work since tuesday I have made some progess on "virgil".
Image
My first thoughts were to start pulling the drive train at this point, but I decided it would way easier to pull the tub firstImage
Friday I got all the bolts out and cut the brake lines and steering shaft as all that will have to be replace anyway, Saturday afternoon I rounded up five guys to lift the body off, couple small hiccups I forgot the e brake cable therefore we had to some quick cutting. Surprisingly there is still gas in the tank.Image

After everyone left I went to work on the drive train I did pretty good I think pulled it all off the frame in about 2.5 hours not to bad alone I don’t think.

Great stuff. Reminds me of when I stripped my '70.

One thought on where you sit at this point: Having been exposed to fire and then setting for years (decades?), I highly recommend you dip and galvanize your frame. The tub is going to take blasting if there is any metal underneath that rust, but blasting won't get inside the frame rails. Dip and galvanize will ensure your hard work will remain on a solid foundation.
