Transmission Concern (Heat)

Postby BornJeep » Mon Aug 08, 2011 12:39 pm

I'm a little concerned about transmission overheating. I finished reading all the Owners info that comes with my new Unlimited and it has a lot of information about tranmission overheating. Also I recently had 2 people tell me they traded their jeeps due to transmission overheating (found out later neither was a JK and both over 3 yrs old).

Has anyone had this problem during normal daily driving and/or trail driving? For instance on the way to Tulsa from OKC (turnpike) mine shifted back and forth quite a bit although I didn't notice any problems and everything seemed to run great. This route is kinda hilly.

Just curious if it's a problem I should look forward to although I'm not bashful about adding a hydraulic fluid cooler if needed.

Get a stacked plate transmission cooler and you will be golden. I did it...on my second transmission.

It's a 2011 Unlimited with almost 2000 miles. I haven't had any problems so far but I'm hearing/reading a lot of information about transmission overheating. I intend to pull a trailer (golf cart and occasional small pop up camper) and also intend to do large amounts of trail driving/wheeling. I don't want the problems so I'd like to fix the issue before it starts if I find it's a real problem and not just random situations.

No worries. It'll take a lot more than that to hurt my feelings :D

So you installed the cooler (I looked them up after you mentioned it) and now I'm curious if it affects your A/C since they mount in front of the condensor or is there a better mount location?

Also when you installed it did you have any strange problems or anything come up I need to know before I start my install?

Thanks for the advice.

A/C works fine. Engine cooling is fine. This is where dealerships put them when you have them do it. Just follow one of the write ups on JKForum. Total cost is like 65$ and maybe 0.5hrs.

When you run the hose for the cooler, be sure and make the hose about a foot longer than needed so you'll have some extra incase someone needs it.
Look at that, a SILVER Jeep!
