oil leak

Postby rlpetty43 » Tue May 14, 2013 7:34 am

While on the way to the kiamichi mountains I discovered I have a fairly bad oil leak rough guess about 1/2 quart per half a tank of gas while running on the hwy, it only seems to leak while at rpms 2500-3000. intown and trail it doesnt leak It looks like it may be my real main seal I will investigate further before I do anything. My thoughts are since the motor has 200k on it anyway about getting another 4.0 to rebuild so I can swap it out completely and now I have a good solid motor and not have my jeep down for awhile. Any thoughts and are all 4.0 HO blocks the same or would I need a specific year range to replace with?

Other thought I have is just change the front, rear seal pan gasket and oil pump.

I had an interesting and fast leak earlier this year: oil pressure sending unit. Turned out to be simple fix. I found out it us fairly common on our old jeep engines.

I had a 1990 Cherokee Limited and now a 2000 XJ Cherokee Sport. I can tell you , that I noticed a difference when I opened the XJ's hood the first time. If I remember right, my '90 did not have a coil rack like my '00. There are a few other differences. If you see allot of oil under the front of your tranny, you may need a rear main seal. I had to put on in my '90 and problems were gone. Good luck.

I probably should have updated this, but I did replace the rear main seal and while at I replace the oil pump in June of 2013. it was fairly straight forward and did not have to pull the transmission due to have a two piece rear main seal
