You could spend a tiny amount by pulling a $100 head from pull a part, polish it and swap on your rig.
You could actually end up with a better running rig if you do it right.

Three bad thermostats? Or a bigger problem?
That sounds like what I'm going for. I heard I should look for a head with TUPY stamped into it. If I got one that was already machine it would save me a step. Are there any other swaps or repairs I should do while I'm in there? I was considering a valve job.…

Three bad thermostats? Or a bigger problem?
Update: I spent Sunday, Monday evening, and this evening trying to get to the head gasket. Got down to the head, pulled the bolts, but then couldn't lift it up. Is there a trick to it? I don't think I should pry it up, because I'm worried about scratching the surface. Is there a good way that anyone knows of? Also, what's the best way to clean my valve cover/rocker arms/ etc? Just wipe it up and toss the rags?
Lastly, I won't be at the meeting next Tuesday because I will be in Costa Rica.

You have to pry up on the head to get it off. They stick real good. Just use a pry bar or long screwdriver. There is usally one or two places around the head where there is a small gap that you can pry at. Normally one good pop and it loose.
A couple cans of brake cleaner and a roll of blue shop paper towels work ok to clean parts off.

Three bad thermostats? Or a bigger problem?
Well guys, I finally did it! Pulled out the cylinder head this evening with much fanfare. Found stuff underneath which doesn't belong there. (Feel free to comment on next steps to take). Taking the head to a machine shop tomorrow. Anyone know a good one, or one to avoid?
Thanks to everyone who helped/advised/encouraged, either on the forums or at the meetings. Sad I won't be there next week, but hoping to show up in my Jeep in March.

Three bad thermostats? Or a bigger problem?
Update: I successfully replaced the head gasket and didn't have any parts left over! I'd show a final pic, but it just looks like an engine so...
But here's one of the block surface after we cleaned it, I guess. See you guys Tuesday!
