8.8 Ford Swap in 98 TJ Photobucket pics

Postby forkliftguy2833 » Wed Jan 11, 2012 11:48 pm

Here is a link to a 8.8 Ford Explorer rear end swap I just finished. Photobucket picture link http://s1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb3 ... nd%20swap/

The rear end was out of a 95 Explorer with 4.10 gears. Set the pinion angle to 15 degrees, now wishing I would have gone to 17 to reduce vibration with my 4" lift. Huge help was the $9 purchase of an angle finder at Home Depot! Inland Drive Line in OKC had the u-joint to make the Ford yoke work on the Jeep driveshaft. M.O.R.E. sold me the mounting kit, beware no instructions! But Stu Olsens jeep site had a nice article, not exactly perfect but a good start. http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/8.8axle/8.8axle-1.htm

Next step on the rear end, install ARB air locker.

I stitch welded them with 4- 1" welds. At least that's what everyone said to do. :D

My son called me after I was almost finished and said he read that the bottom has a square cut that is bad about hanging up on rocks. I went ahead and welded a piece in the square to keep it from hanging, We'll see!

Did you do the c-clip eliminator/super 88 kit set up? Don't forget a couple of cans of spray paint to throw in the trail bag as well.

That's pretty cool. I'll have to wait until I get my next allowance.
