Engine change out

Postby wb2011 » Sun Jan 01, 2012 4:18 pm

I have a 1997 TJ Wrangler with a 4 cylinder 2.5 engine. I would like to upgrade to a 6 cylinder, is this a lot of trouble or easy enough?

Its very simple, only two steps.
1 take old engine out
2 put new engine in

But I think its going to be harder than in sounds...

I just recently bought a grand cherokee just for the purpose of upgrading my wrangler to the magnificent I6. long story short, I just finished rebuilding the cherokee's busted transmission instead, so i can use that as a DD while I have fun in my wrangler. When I looked in to all that would have to go into the engine swap, it was pretty overwhelming. the main issue for me was that the forward engine mounts have to be grinded off and welded back on, a few inches forward. Along with replacing harness, ecu, and making sure your drivetrain can handle the extra power (i would have needed new tranny {upgrade to ax15}).

I am nearing the completion of swaping out the 4 cylinder in my YJ, it only takes 12 month, 3 days, 4 hours, and 6 minutes to get this far. My swap was a little more involved than going from a 4 cylinder to a 6 cylinder, but you are correct the engine mount will need to be relocated, a different ECM, wiring harness, not to mention hoses, maybe radiator, trans mount, driveshfts, and exhaust. Not to discourage you, it is very doable, but there is always more than you plan on. Look forward to hearing about your progress. Alway remember the true meaning to Jeep, Just Empty Every Pocket, memories priceless.
